INTERCARGO News Article

June 23, 2008 - What's hot in 2008-2009 ?

Intercargo members create dry bulk shipping policy at the regular six monthly meetings of its Executive and Technical Committees. The decisions that members reach at these meetings are then taken forward to the relevant IMO, IACS, Round Table, Governments or other Committees or institutions.

To ensure that Members are aware of all the up-to-date developments between meetings, two page briefing notes are issued on all Intercargo work programmes with the latest version to be found on the Members-only area of the Intercargo website. These briefing notes also include rhetorical questions which the Member may wish to consider internally at Board meetings etc before the Intercargo meeting is held.

But we believe that some non-members may also wish to undertake their own internal discussions on topical issues and as a service to the wider international dry bulk shipping community, we will post some of these Briefing Notes on the public area of the website to encourage and stimulate debate.

For information, the 2008-2009 Intercargo Work Programme for which Briefing Notes have been produced, includes the following issues :-

- Air Emissions
- Common Structural Rules and Goal Based Standards
- Casualties and Transparency
- Criminalisation
- Definition of a Bulk Carrier
- Direct Reduced Iron (DRI)
- Environmental legislation
- Lifeboats
- Loading Rates
- Pooling
- Port State Control Performance
- Reception Facilities
- Stowaways
- Training and Manpower.
