Analysis of Emergency Evacuation from Bulk Carriers

INTERCARGO submitted the “Analysis of Emergency Evacuations from Bulk Carriers”, completed last October – see below, to the IMO Design and Equipment (DE) Sub-committee held 13-17 February 2012. Our submission summarised the outcome of the study and the five prioritised performance influencing factors identified. In introducing the paper we stressed the most important factors in the context of the DE Sub-committee, familiarisation and equipment, highlighting the strong link between them and noting that equipment standardisation would reduce human error in the event of an evacuation. We suggested the Goal Based Standards for Life Saving Appliances being developed by the IMO should include a goal of standardising the operation of life saving equipment in order to facilitate the familiarisation of crews with its use.
