“World Maritime Day 2021: Seafarers: at the core of shipping’s future”

30 September 2021

“World Maritime Day 2021: Seafarers: at the core of shipping’s future”

On this World Maritime Day 2021, INTERCARGO stands by our ‘Seafarers: at the core of shipping’s future’, joining the IMO and the shipping industry.

Seafarers are the true “heart” of global shipping and they are key workers offering absolutely essential services. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, seafarers have found themselves both on the front line of the global response and subjected to difficult working conditions, surrounded by uncertainties and difficulties around shore leave in ports, access to medical facilities on shore, re-supply, crew changeovers and repatriation.

The dry bulk sector is the largest shipping sector in terms of number of ships and deadweight. Around 12,000 bulk carriers, accounting for 43% of the world fleet in tonnage, employ over 300,000 seafarers globally at a time.
