The eighty-fourth session of IMO’s MARINE ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION COMMITTEE (MEPC 84) took place from Monday 27 April to Friday 1 May 2026.

INTERCARGO Brief on the outcome of the meeting – Key Topics

The key topics that were discussed at MEPC 84 and may be of interest to Members included:

  • Ballast Water Management
  • Air Emissions/GHG Reduction
  • Energy Efficiency of Ships
  • Fuel Quality-Quantity/Sulphur Limits
  • Biofouling/In-water cleaning

Although not part of INTERCARGO’s work program, the following topics were also discussed:

  • Scrubbers
  • Black Carbon/HFO in the Arctic
  • Underwater Noise
  • Ship Recycling/Hong Kong Convention

In view of IMO’s MEPC 84, INTERCARGO had had issued along with other industry associations the Joint Statement “Shipping Industry United In Support Of IMO As Its Global Regulator And Successful Implementation Of IMO GHG Reduction Pathway” (available here)
