Bulk Carrier Incidents and Analysis, 2023

Among the many incidents involving bulk carriers in 2023, the serious ones include:

  1. Bulk carrier YONG XING 56, IMO No. 9493494, sank on 1 March 2023 in the Tartar Strait, after suffering massive water ingress from a hull breach on 23 February. All the crew were safely evacuated from the ship.
  2. Capesize bulk carrier INDIAN PARTNERSHIP, IMO No. 9521409, loaded with 178,000 tons of bauxite ore, hit an uncharted reef in the Ceram Sea on 22 Apr 2023 and ran aground at Misool island east coast, Ceram sea, Indonesia. Ship’s starboard underwater hull was breached in fore area, causing massive water ingress. Ship was reportedly, resting on bottom, with fore tilt and starboard list. All 22 crew were safe and unharmed, and there was no pollution.
