Bulk Carrier Incidents in 2022 and Analysis

Two losses of bulk carriers were reported in 2022:

1) Bulk carrier OS 35 (IMO No. 9172399, dwt 35362) sustained hull breach in fore section following a collision with an LNG carrier on 29 Aug 2022, and grounded at Catalan Bay, to avoid sinking. The hull suffered substantial damage after the grounding. The broken hull leaked heavy fuel oil just off the east coast of Gibraltar. All 24 crew members were evacuated. It was reported on 19 Sept 2022 that the ship’s hull was broken, although not completely split in two.

2) Cement carrier Xing Shun No 1 (IMO No. 9665451, dwt 9999), lost power and sank in rough seas in Taiwan Strait on 31 Oct 2022, with 12 crew members missing.
