The second 2017 session of lNTERCARGO lunchtime presentations succesfully took place in a full room at our London office on 24 May 2017.

on the topic of “Future Fuels – the 2020 challenge”:
In less than three years from now and at an estimated cost to the industry of USD 60 billion the MARPOL Annex VI regulations will limit the sulphur content in marine fuel oils used outside an emission control area for SOx (ECA-SOx) to a maximum 0.50% m/m. The experiences of switching from 1.00% to 0.10% inside ECA-SOX from 01 January 2015 has provided the marine industry an insight into the diverse of fuel compositions being supplied and the challenges of extended use on distillates. The question therefore remains ‘what can we expect with 0.50%?’.
The interest in the use of alternatives to conventional hydrocarbon fuels such as LNG and Methanol is expanding. Alternative options, such as scrubbers, were discussed, as well as any specific challenges that apply to dry bulk carriers. The presentation was followed by a Q&A session discussing possibilities and concerns when preparing a compliance road map to 2020.
