INTERCARGO’s Brief's for IMO’s MEPC 81

The 81^st session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 80) was held from Monday, 18 March to Friday, 22 March 2024.

The key topics discussed were:

• Air Emissions/GHG Reduction
• Energy Efficiency of Ships
• Ballast Water Management
• Fuel Quality/Sulphur limits

Key Outcomes

2023 IMO GHG Strategy and Mid Term Measures

• A draft structure , the “IMO net-zero framework”, was agreed aiming to accommodate the amendments to MARPOL Annex VI with regards to the Regulations on the Goal-based marine fuel standard & the Economic mechanism(s) and will be used as the basis for further development.
• All measures remained under further discussion.

• Work will continue intersessionally in a Fifth GHG Expert Workshop and the ISWG-GHG 17 that will be held prior to MEPC 82 (October 2024).
