Tripartite 2025
In October 2025, INTERCARGO joined shipowners, shipyards, and classification societies in Busan, South Korea, for the annual Tripartite Meeting — a key forum for addressing the maritime industry’s technical, regulatory, and sustainability challenges.
INTERCARGO’s delegation, comprising Dr Kostas Gkonis, Director / Secretary General, Emmanuel Vergetis, Regional Representative, and Ed Wroe, Technical Manager, played an active role throughout the event, contributing expertise on bulk carrier safety, sustainability, and future regulatory frameworks.
As part of the discussions, Emmanuel Vergetis presented an update on the bulk carrier shore power standard. Ed Wroe chaired Session 3 (Environment), which focused on environmental compliance and related operational challenges.
Over two days, the forum explored a wide range of topics:
• Decarbonisation and alternative fuels, including onshore power standards and onboard carbon capture technologies
• Autonomous ships and digitalisation, exploring how technology can improve safety and efficiency
• Environmental compliance, covering ballast water, grey water, biofouling, and
scrubber discharge
• Operational safety, including propulsion systems, structural materials, and fire testing
INTERCARGO extends its gratitude to ICS for organising the forum and to KSA, KR,KOSHIPA for their support and hospitality, and to all Tripartite partners — ASEF, BIMCO, IACS, INTERTANKO and SEA Europe, — whose contributions made the discussions both productive and forward-looking.
As the forum concluded, it was clear that the Tripartite platform remains a cornerstone for knowledge-sharing and innovation, helping the maritime sector navigate technical, environmental, and operational challenges while steering toward a sustainable future.
