Key Details on the Expansion to Maritime

Dear Members
The UK authority has published an interim response to the 2024 UK ETS Expansion to Maritime consultation:
- The UK Emissions Trading Scheme (UK ETS) is scheduled to begin on 1 July 2026 and
- will include the Emission at Berth from International Voyages for vessels of 5000 gross tonnage (GT) and above.
- It also includes MRV requirements.

Next Steps
A complete and final response will be published in due course. It will address remaining issues including exemptions, Northern Ireland routes, and the emissions cap adjustment.
Early onboarding
The UK Environment Agency (EA) is working to finalise the regulatory digital system ‘Manage your UK ETS Trading Scheme’ (METS) to allow for voluntary onboarding in advance of the scheme. The EA will confirm when it is ready to start voluntary early onboarding.
- Operators can sign up for EA newsletters and register their interest for voluntary onboarding through this link (UK ETS Maritime Early Onboarding Sign Up) or by contacting the EA through their helpdesk etmaritimehelp@environmentagency.gov.uk.
UK ETS Authority updates
The UK ETS Authority will be hosting an overview webinar to outline the decisions in the interim response. Members may sign up to the UK ETS Authority stakeholder alert mailing list to receive details about these events. through this link (UK ETS Authority).
