1.Bulk carrier casualties in 2025
The internal records of the Secretariat show the following four bulk carrier casualties (dwt > 10k) to be included in the INTERCARGO Bulk Carrier Casualty Report 2026:
- An Yang 2 (IMO No. 9563421)
An Yang 2 (IMO No. 9563421) ran aground off the southwest coast of Sakhalin Island in stormy conditions on 8 Feb 2025. It was subsequently reported that the ship may be scrapped in place and cut up for salvage due to the low probability of moving it from the location where it ran aground.
- Bulk carrier Glengyle (IMO No. 9727285)
Bulk carrier Glengyle (IMO No. 9727285) partially sank on the Long Tau River near Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, on April 25, 2025, after a collision with a container ship. The collision resulted in a breached hull, significant flooding, and a fuel oil spill from the Glengyle, leading to ongoing cleanup and salvage operations. No injuries to crew members were reported.
- Magic Seas (IMO No. 9736169)
Bulk carrier Magic Seas (IMO No. 9736169) was sunk in the Red Sea on or around July 6, 2025, after being attacked by Houthi rebels. The attack, which involved unmanned surface vessels, skiffs with rocket-propelled grenades and machine guns, and likely explosive demolition charges, forced the crew to abandon ship before the vessel fully sank.
- Eternity C (IMO No. 9588249)
Bulk carrier Eternity C (IMO No. 9588249) was sunk in the Red Sea on July 9, 2025, after being attacked by Houthi rebels starting on July 7. The attacks involved sea drones and skiffs, killing four crew members in the attack and its immediate aftermath, with others injured.
INTERCARGO members have been approached for input of any other bulk carrier (dwt >10k) casualties that occurred in 2025, and requested to share the relevant information by 27 Jan 2026.
2.Serious dry cargo ship incidents in 2025
There were many incidents involving dry cargo ships in 2025, including the following serious ones – lessons to be learned:
- Cargo explosion
An explosion was reported aboard bulk carrier W-Sapphire (IMO No. 9605645) in Baltimore Harbor on 18 Aug 2025. Investigators are probing whether spontaneous combustion or coal dust ignition might have triggered the incident. (link)
- Black Sea
A Greek-managed bulk carrier MJ Pinar, IMO 9406051 – A missile attack on 11 Mar 2025 damaged the grain vessel in the Black Sea port of Odesa, killing four crew members and injuring two others.
- Total loss
General cargo ship Run Fu 3 (IMO: 9138903) suffered water ingress in one of the cargo holds, abandoned and capsized in the Indian Ocean approximately 500 nautical miles (930 km) south of the Maldives on 11 Jn 2025. All 23 crew members were rescued by another ship.
- Red Sea
The Dutch-flagged general cargo ship Minervagracht (IMO 9571521) was severely damaged by a Houthi missile attack, 128 nautical miles southeast of the port of Aden, Yemen, on 29 Sept 2025. As a result of the attack, she was on fire and adrift. All 19 crew members were rescued, among whom were two seriously wounded.
